  CYBERSECURITY JOB HUNTING GUIDE

Introduction into Cybersecurity

Author: Stefan Waldvogel

Many people are moving into Cybersecurity. Most people do this by going to college for a degree, and getting certifications. Why do most people go into Cybersecurity? Here are a few reasons people have told me:
  • Because it’s awesome!
  • Money Money Money!
  • Projected job growth
  • Job flexibility (lots of WFH opportunities)
  • Wanting justice and to take down bad guys! (dun DUN DUNNNN!!)

These are all good reasons (usually helps to have multiple of them. It'll take a lot more motivation than just being in it for the money if you’re going to make it!), but many people are going into the field without having a particular goal or specialization in mind, which reduces their chance to land the dream role and prevents them from being able to choose a beginners/entry level role to eventualy be able to work up to the dream goal.
This article will explain each step to take to bring you closer to a cybersecurity job and tell you something about the dark side, too. (and I’m not talking about the dark side of the force, though we can talk about that too!)

We will discuss topics like:
  • Goal setting and finding a specific job/area of focus
  • What can you do during your (university) study time?
  • A $50 path to get a job in Cybersecurity
  • Job hunting and writing a CV/Resume
If you disagree with something, write a comment on LinkedIn. Growing is possible if we help each other. I relate most numbers and salaries to the US. You can use google, Glassdoor, LinkedIn, etc., to find the average salaries in your city.
