CYBERSECURITY JOB HUNTING GUIDE
Author: Stefan Waldvogel
Goal setting
Goal setting is one of the most important things. Honestly, I failed to do it the right way because I didn’t know how to do it. Someone told me, Cybersecurity is an excellent field… I researched a bit and started on the red side. Pen-testing…. That sounds cool. The reality is: I am an immigrant, and I do not have US citizenship. I am out… wrong idea. There are few jobs without this requirement, but the competition to get one is high.
Goal setting requires knowledge. If you do not know, you cannot set a goal. This guide shows two ways to get this knowledge. The first path is via companies. You google for job ads, ask friends, and later go for it. For this path, you need an idea, but most people have an idea. A second path is an option if you know one thing: With Cybersecurity, I can earn a lot of money, and that is it.
If you prefer YouTube or want to see different details, you can watch BHIS’s InfoSec Job Hunting videos. These are five videos, and each is about 2 hours: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_Zfzzl2sPg
The first video is about “How to Locate the Work You Want” and contains at least ten times more tips and tricks than this article but focuses on the job-hunting process only. Watch it, if you have time.
Career paths
This chapter includes some career paths and I will try to add more an more options. You can get the first idea with www.cyberseek.org/pathway.html. This website is interactive and gives detailed information about each of the mentioned nine jobs including salary, job openings, requested skills and more.
